Chapter Seven

Chase was in the ballroom, drop cloths underneath his feet as he sawed and shaped a series of Greek columns. He loved working with his hands. There was the technical side of his job, the architectural design, the calculations and formulas inherent with creating a structure which he enjoyed immensely. But what he loved more was actually creating the design with his own two hands. It soothed his soul in ways little else did.

He'd worked at an architectural firm in Manhattan for a half dozen years before he decided to break free and go it on his own. Chase liked what he did, while he wasn't creating monolithic buildings that would stand the test of time and be lauded for generations, or designing new homes and discovering ways to improve a home's durability, he felt like he was creating works of art that brought people joy. It had been by accident that he'd fallen into designing temporary structures for weddings. And now his designs were highly sought after in the wedding industry. His creations had landed on numerous bridal magazine covers over the years and the industry standards were constantly changing. He liked the fact that he could design multiple projects in a year.

Whenever he worked like this with his hands and tools he would lose track of time, getting lost inside the act of creation. Well, usually he would. Today had been an unlikely exception to the rule. As he carved and contoured the wood, he remembered the silky feel of Kara's skin. The way her hips curved and flared. How her breasts fit snuggly in his hands and the feel of her tight sheath around him. He didn't think he'd ever been so happy with nary a dark cloud hovering. The fact that he and Zeke had finally joined with Kara drove away most of the darkness in his soul.

He loved her, had almost since the first time they had met. Even though he still felt part of the puzzle piece was missing in his heart, he was confident that loving Kara, having her love him back, would be enough.

It had to be enough.

By the time he finished for the day, dinner had come and gone and the sun had set. He liked Declan's home. There were a couple of things he would change if it was his, from an architectural standpoint, anyway. Mrs. Stewart fed him dinner in the kitchen upon his request. He was filthy from his work and didn't want to make more work for the help than necessary. Chase's mom had been a hotel maid when he was growing up and she'd always seemed so tired. He never liked adding to someone's plate, even when he knew that Declan paid his help extremely well.

The older matron clucked about him like a mother hen, making sure he had his fill of succulent roast beef. She reminded him a bit of his mother before she'd passed. He didn't know why he was thinking about his mom so much other than he knew she would have adored Kara.
